A KINGS Park botanist is studying propagation viability of water lilies (Nymphaeacea), which occur in high-rainfall areas of Northern Australia.

Emma Dalziell who has made several collecting trips to the Kimberley, Darwin and Kakadu is collaborating with the Millennium Seed Bank Project (MSB) at Kew Gardens in England.

“Many of the storage techniques I’m using have arisen from King’s Parks longstanding research collaboration with the MSB,” she says.

“My PhD is specifically focusing on seed biology, long term storage behaviour of all Nymphaeacea occurring in Australia,” she says.

The seeds are subject to a variety of stimuli to assess their viability, and define suitable habitat types and appropriate storage and propagation conditions for possible reintroduction or restoration programs.

She says unlike Northern Hemisphere species, Australian lilies are adapted to long dry winters and the hot monsoonal conditions of Northern Australia’s “wet”.

They tolerate seed desiccation and can often grow, flower and produce seed in a relatively short time.

She says Australian lilies need a temperature range of 30–35 degrees Celcius to germinate.

“They are physiologically dormant,” she says. “They are waiting for various environmental cues.”

Ms Dalziell is also assessing the various species’ adaptability to climate change and related conditions such as increased salinity.

She gave the example of a two-centimetre rise in sea level, which could produce salt water inundations extending as far as five kilometres inland at Kakadu National Park.

Australian lilies have just been subjected to taxonomic review and there are now 18 recognised species across Northern Australia.

These range from Nymphaea violacea, which grows in a wide variety of habitats, to Nymphaea ondinea which is restricted to the extremely pure waters of sandstone creeks in only six known Kimberley locations.

Even rarer is Nymphaea kimberleyensis, which is known to occur in just one waterhole in a Central Kimberley cattle station.

Ms Dalziell says lilies are still an important food source for Aboriginal peoples across Northern Australia.

Dried Nymphaea violacea seeds are ground into flour for damper, the raw stems are eaten like celery and the tubers boiled and roasted as a vegetable.

Ms Dalziell says compared to other taxa, there has been very little research into Australian lilies’ biology and ecology.

A report says Vancouver’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest takes good care of its Indian Heaven, Mount Adams and Trapper Creek wilderness areas.

Now, if the forest only had a few more to manage . . .

More newspaper stories this week take us to a hot springs in Idaho, winter mountain biking on Horse Ridge outside Bend and for a hike with flesh-eating plants in the Illinois River Valley.

Don’t worry, the plants prefer insects over mammals.

This is some of what regional newspapers are writing about travel and outdoor recreation around the Northwest.

Southwest Washington wild areas: the U.S. Forest Service has scored Trapper Creek, Indian Heaven and Mount Adams in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest as among the best managed wilderness areas in Washington and Oregon. _ From Allen Thomas and the Vancouver Columbian.

An Idaho hot springs: Jerry Johnson Hot Springs, three thermal pools in the Clearwater National Forest, beckoned with the prospect of a good soak. _ From Susan Gallagher/AP via the Seattle Times.

Winter biking on Horse Ridge: Being graced with an exceedingly mellow disposition, Map Guy doesn’t excite easily. But show him a map, especially one with lots of detail, and he lights up like it’s prom night and his date is the prettiest girl in school. That was about his reaction when he first saw the Bureau of Land Management’s map of the Horse Ridge Recreation Area, a sprawl of land southeast of Bend, just across U.S. Highway 20 from the Oregon Badlands Wilderness. _ From David Jasper and the Bend Bulletin.

Hiking with hungry plants: Cobra lily, pitcher plant and tube plant are three of the common names associated with Darlingtonia californica, a carnivorous plant found growing only in Northern California and Southern Oregon. Durie awarded for design, environment work

1327718374 57 Durie awarded for design, environment work

Jamie Durie may be a household name because of his television appearances but it is his environmental, charitable and design work that has earned him a Medal of the Order of Australia.

Mr Durie, who splits his time between the United States and Australia, says he was surprised to learn of the award.

“I'm absolutely pinching myself,” he said.

“It was a big, big shock.”

The qualified horticulturist and landscape gardener has done work for environmental and conservation organisations for the past 15 years.

He said that, although environmental issues have become fashionable, more needs to be done to protect the planet.

“I think we all bury our heads in the sand a bit,” he said.

“At some point we've really got to focus on saving the planet.”

Although he says Australia is moving in the right direction environmentally, Mr Durie would like it to invest more in renewable energy and reduce its carbon footprint.

“In terms of carbon emissions I think Australia needs to do more,” he said.

“Per capita we're still one of the highest in terms of carbon emissions.”

Mr Durie is pleased the award also recognises his design work, which has included a gold medal at Britain's prestigious Chelsea Flower show.

“I was over the moon to have that included because it's something I've put a lot of energy into,” he said.

“It's very hard to get integrity in the design industry and my television work tends to overshadow it.

“It means a lot to me that I'm more than just a face on television.”

1327717172 42 FSA reminds farmers of deadline for crop disaster assistance

Farm Service Agency County Executive Director David Q. Vidrine reminds farmers and producers in Beauregard and Vernon parishes that, for the 2012 crop year, Feb. 28 is the final date to apply for Noninsured Crop Disaster assistance (NAP) coverage on grass for grazing and hay, and summer seeded vegetables such as peas, watermelons, tomatoes and okra. Producers should discuss the current year planning intentions with the local FSA office to ensure application deadlines are not missed. Producers of commercially grown produce and fruits are encouraged to contact the local FSA office to learn more about the NAP program. General NAP coverage will not begin until the later of the following dates — either 30 calendar days after the completion of the application for coverage, or the date the crop is planted not to exceed the final planting date. in previous years, producers applying for benefits under the Supplemental Revenue assistance Payment Program (SURE), Tree assistance Program (TAP) or the Livestock, Honey Bees and Farm Raised Fish Program (ELAP) were required to participate in the NAP. however, these programs ended with 2011 crop year. all interested producers should contact the local FSA office for eligibility and application details before the application closing dates.

Fight those itsy-bitsy indoor plant pests

Fight those itsy bitsy indoor plant pests

Plants inside our homes can become infested with insects just like plants outside in our landscapes. Indoor pest problems can arise anytime, but are especially common this time of the year, when many tender tropical plants have been brought inside for the winter.

When indoor infestations do occur, they can be devastating if not dealt with promptly, effectively and safely.

Indoor outbreaks of insect pests can spread rapidly and cause tremendous damage because of the friendly environment. There is no rain to wash off insects, and the temperatures are mild year-round. also, there are no natural predators indoors to help control insect populations.

Insects can spread rapidly because we often group houseplants together in well-lighted locations close to windows or glass doors. with plants in such close proximity, insects have no problem moving from plant to plant.

We also do our share of spreading pests around by handling healthy plants after we’ve handled infested plants.

Three of the most common insect pests that occur indoors are mealybugs, scales and spider mites. if you can identify these problems in the early stages, you can reduce the amount of damage that occurs and prevent the insects from spreading. Close and regular inspection of your plants indoors is the best defense against insect outbreaks.

Meet the enemy

Mealybugs are small, oval, soft-bodied insects usually less than 1/8-inch long, distinctly segmented and usually covered with white powdery or cottony waxy secretions. they are sucking insects that feed on the plant’s sap, and they don’t move around much on the plants.

They typically occur in groups or clumps. Look for white cottony masses in the growing points of plants, in their crowns, under their leaves and where the leaves join the stem of the plant. Many people mistake mealybugs for some sort of fungus infection.

Plants heavily infested with mealybugs will appear unhealthy. the leaves of the plant may appear shiny and feel sticky, and the new growth may appear weak and deformed. Many older leaves will begin to turn yellow and drop off.

Scales are related to mealybugs and are also sucking insects. they are covered with a dome-shaped waxy coating that is most often white, tan or brown, depending on the type of scale.

Once they are large enough to notice, they do not move. this, along with their waxy covering, makes it difficult to become aware of them, and once you do see the strange bumps or dots on the plant, you would never think that they are insects.

As with mealybugs (and many other sucking insects), plants infested with scale will often have shiny, sticky leaves. even the floor or table the plant sits on may become sticky. this an accumulation of honeydew (a sugary, sticky excretion of the scale) on surfaces under the plant.

If the population of scale insects on the plant passes the plant’s tolerance, the plant will begin to lose vigor, and leaves will yellow and drop off.

Spider mites are related to spiders, but, unlike their beneficial relatives, they are damaging to plants. Spider mites are very tiny (most are not readily visible to the naked eye), and the damage they cause is initially very subtle. this makes early detection difficult, and populations are often out of control and damage extensive before the indoor gardener sees there is a problem.

Initial damage to the foliage causes it to appear dull, faded, stippled and unhealthy. as damage increases, new growth may be stunted and deformed, and older leaves may become very faded, show signs of browning and begin to drop off.

High populations of mites may produce fine webbing where the leaves join the main stem and between leaves.

Take prompt action

These three pests attack a tremendous variety of indoor plants. Virtually every plant we grow indoors is susceptible to one or more of them.

When a pest problem is detected, prompt action is needed.

First, isolate the infested plant or plants. All three of these pests are contagious. always wash your hands after working with an infested plant, especially if you are about to handle healthy plants.

Spraying a plant every day with a strong stream or spray of water (get under the leaves especially) will usually get rid of spider mites.

Continue spraying for at least a week. Indoors, this will work well only for plants small enough to move to sinks or showers. Move larger plants outside to a shady area for treatment (weather permitting).

A strong stream of water can be tried on mealybugs, but you should also scrub at the cottony clusters with a soft toothbrush to dislodge them.

You will commonly see recommendations to control mealybugs with rubbing alcohol applied with a cotton swab. this can work, but it is tedious, and you must treat the plant regularly and persistently over several weeks.

Pesticide use

If you decide to use pesticides, you must choose materials that are labeled for use on plants indoors and are safe to use on the plant you intend to spray.

Do not use sprays that are meant to be applied outside or those for controlling indoor house pests such as roaches or ants.

Mealybugs, scales and mites are all controlled by horticulture oil sprays, which kill these pests by suffocation and are relatively low in toxicity. Look for light horticultural oils such as All Seasons Oil or Year Round Spray Oil.

Many insecticidal soap products also have labels for indoor use and are excellent for mites and good on mealybugs, but not very effective on adult scale. Pre-mixed houseplant insecticides that contain pyrethrum or pyrethrin as their active ingredient would also be effective on these pests.

Use pesticides cautiously, and follow label directions precisely. be prepared to make several applications for complete control.

Since spraying can be messy, particularly when spraying larger plants, move plants outside to treat them whenever it is practical and weather allows.

DAN GILL’S MAILBOX

I have two bougainvilleas in hanging baskets. the plants are about 3 feet across, and the baskets are about 12 inches in diameter. can I cut these back, and, if so, when is the best time?

Diane

The best time to prune bougainvilleas is right after they finish a bloom cycle, although you can prune them at anytime without hurting them. we generally get one to three bloom cycles a year — spring, mid- to late summer and fall/winter. I have some bougainvilleas in a greenhouse blooming now, and many bougainvilleas will bloom in spring if they were kept in good shape over the winter. if it is critical to prune them now, feel free to do so. if you can, however, you might want to wait until April or may to see if they will bloom in spring. if you get a spring bloom, cut them back after they finish blooming. Cutting them back now may make a spring blooming less likely, especially if you cut them back hard. But, again, it will not hurt to cut the plants if you need to.

Is it OK to leave leaves under trees as mulch? do I need to mow them first so the rain gets through? also, I’ve read that the leaf mulch should extend out to the drip line of the trees. do you agree?

George Turner

Having leaves under the tree is not just OK, it is perfectly natural and healthy for the tree, and there is no need to chop them with a mower. Think about it; in the wild, the leaves a tree drops land underneath it and stay there to decay. you will simply be creating a natural situation that the tree will appreciate. the mulch can extend as far out from the trunk as you like. Extending it to the drip line is excellent, if you don’t have lawn grass growing there. Generally, mulches under trees should be no deeper than 4 to 6 inches. Pull the mulch slightly back from the trunk of the tree.

I would greatly appreciate your help in identifying the insect in the attached photo, and your advice on which insecticide I should use to eradicate them from my garden. they seem to damage my hibiscus buds.

Bonnie Rousset

Thank you so much for attempting to identify an insect before you start spraying with insecticides. far too often, gardeners grab insecticides and spray when it isn’t needed. the insect in the photo is our native assassin bug, one of our most common and most valuable predatory insects found in gardens. Please do not spray to kill them. they eat other bugs and are your friend in the garden. the insect in the photo is a nymph, or immature, assassin bug. When they are mature, they continue to have an orange body and long black legs, but they lose the spots and grow black wings crossed over their backs. you may also see clusters of small nymphs on occasion. Siblings tend to stay together for a while after hatching. you will often see them congregated at the tips of branches, waiting and looking for insects to prey on. on hibiscuses, assassin bugs would not damage the flower buds, but rather would likely help to control aphids, an insect pest which commonly infests these bushes.

Cultivating global green thumbs – Yellow Springs News

1327712349 82 Cultivating global green thumbs – Yellow Springs News

For many, yard work can be a chore. for Nadia Malarkey, the care and cultivation of her backyard labyrinth of trees, vines and plants is perennially a joy. At their best, gardens can be places of respite, connection and, above all, environmental stewardship. but common landscape practices can damage trees, kill soil life and pollute waterways. so the local garden designer has teamed up with an arborist and two organic farmers to share the secrets to creating beautiful, biodiverse, carbon-neutral natural landscapes free of synthetic chemicals.

Over the next month, their free educational series on environmentally friendly landscaping will cover the principles of garden design, alternatives to lawns, soil care, tree maintenance and more.

It begins Jan. 30 with a talk on the “lowest layer” or foundation of a garden — healthy soil, compost and the carbon cycle — by Doug Christen of Smaller Footprint Farm and John DeWine of Flying Mouse Farms. Malarkey of Garden Design, will then speak on designing a “middle layer” of plants, shrubs and small trees to create unique ecological spaces on Feb. 13. Bob Moore of Green Canopy Group will discuss tree stewardship on a session on the “upper layer” of trees on Feb. 27. all presentations run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Antioch University Midwest PNC Auditorium in Yellow Springs and are free of charge.

“The challenge today is how to restore the ecology in a way that’s still aesthetically pleasing,” said Malarkey, a professional garden designer of 16 years. “We can be a restorative force, not just destructive.”

The series grew out of discussions between Moore, a certified arborist, and Malarkey about today’s abysmal landscaping practices. Trees are planted too close to sidewalks and roads, leaving roots struggling for soil and buckling the surrounding concrete. People mulch too closely to tree trunks and use ground up tires that leach zinc into the soil. Plastic weed barriers disrupt water infiltration. Nurseries sell diseased trees. Trees are weakened when their tops are cut off to clear the way for power lines. Chemical pesticides and fertilizer kill microorganisms and worms in the soil. Amidst lawn monocultures, native bird and plant species lack habitats to thrive.

But by designing for the long-term health of trees, selecting the right species, replacing patches of grass, prioritizing maintenance, eschewing chemicals and emphasizing biodiversity, homeowners can be good stewards of their environment and community, Moore and Malarkey said.

“In our daily lives, it’s not possible to become carbon neutral because of our lifestyles,” Malarkey said. “Where you can have an impact is your backyard. It can help you become carbon negative,” she said, explaining how an oak tree, planted in the right place and maintained properly, can sequester carbon for 80 years.

But those who nurture large swaths of green lawn should not be ashamed. Lawns are not all bad, the horticulturalists assured.

“Lawns create a negative space, a juxtaposition,” Malarkey said. “It’s a calming space to the eye.” but there are 25 million acres of lawn in the U.S., higher than any other irrigated crop. so monoculture lawns should be balanced with biodiversity in order to support wildlife, she said.

“It’s more interesting if you at least rip some of [the lawn] out” for biodiversity, said DeWine, who has a PhD in ecology. but more important for the soil is how lawns are treated, he said. Lawns that are given compost and mulched by leaving the grass clippings in place can have good soil.

Most problematic are the practices used to maintain a “perfect” lawn — among them the frequent dousing of the land with chemical pesticides and fertilizers , some of which ends up in local waterways. About 90 million tons of pesticides and fertilizers are dumped on U.S. lawns every year, according to Malarkey.

Chemicals can also be harmful to the abundant life in the soil, DeWine said. He and Christen will talk about how the microorganisms, fungi and other living creatures in soil and the cycling of nutrients within the soil support healthy plant life.

Meanwhile, Moore will direct attention to the upper canopy of large trees. of local concern is Yellow Springs’ mature canopy of trees, which if not properly maintained can fall on power lines and buildings during severe weather in what are known as “arborgeddon” events. making sure that construction projects don’t damage roots, pruning trees while they’re young, planting the right species and not “topping” trees, which can weaken and kill them, are all strategies that will be explained during his talk.

Moore is a plant broker of 11 years who has delivered trees to TV’s Judge Judy and new England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. He will also share tips on buying plants and trees from nurseries and provide resource lists on the best local companies during his session.

Meanwhile, Malarkey will focus on the largely underused middle strata. whereas lawns punctuated with large trees are the norm, the middle canopy can be used to support large amounts of wildlife. Birds are particularly vulnerable to loss of habitat, Malarkey said. About 200 of the 800 North American bird species are at risk, she said.

One contentious issue to be discussed during the series is the planting of non-native species. while it is important to provide refuge for natives and to avoid planting invasive species, non-natives can be good choices for local gardens, the horticulturalists said.

“If they are proven safe, non-natives are fine,” said DeWine, as long as invasives, which can take over an area and spread out of control, are avoided. After all, most food crops grown locally are non-native species, he said. Especially ravenous invasives in this area, such as honeysuckle, garlic mustard and euonymus, should be eradicated from lawns whenever possible.

There are other benefits to the environmentally friendly approach. It may help homeowners avoid long, strenuous hours of yard maintenance, according to DeWine, who said he believes that once perennial systems are established, they can take less maintenance than what is required to keep a lawn trimmed.

Designing and nurturing a garden can be an inspiring personal experience that feeds the soul, Malarkey added. She quoted British garden designer Russell Page as saying, “Green fingers are the extension of a verdant heart.” And caring for our yards can affect more than our own lives and our local ecosystem.

“This is a planet we all want to save,” Malarkey said. “Whether it’s organic, permaculture, native species … if everyone just takes care of their yard, we can make a difference.”

For more information, contact Malarkey at 937-767-8681.

Freshwater Aquarium Fish

 Freshwater Aquarium Fish

Aquariums not only make beautiful additions to homes but they also make a great relaxation method which is why they can be found in dentists and doctors offices quite frequently. When it comes to keeping an aquarium there are a number of choices that determine how easy your aquarium will be to take care of as well as how difficult the fish that you choose to keep will be to take care of. while the biggest choice for many people centers on the choice between saltwater versus a freshwater aquarium, the truth of the matter is that with the technology that exists today both varieties of tanks can be equally as user friendly as each other. Many beginner aquarium keepers, however, decide to go with a freshwater aquarium due to the fact that they are easier to maintain without splashing out for the most expensive and recent equipment on the market. Keeping a simple freshwater aquarium gives the benefits of keeping an aquarium without the cost of purchasing an elaborate set up.

Temperature

While many people may claim that keeping a freshwater aquarium is simple, when working with a basic aquarium set up there are certain aspects that you should keep in mind in order to help your aquarium to thrive. It is important to remember that the temperature of any aquarium needs to be maintained within a steady range in order to support the life within the tank. Most people are able to maintain the required temperature for the fish selection in their aquarium; however, many people neglect the plant life that they place within their aquarium which is equally as dependent upon the temperature of the water. It is crucial to select fish that thrive within a similar temperature range as well as plants that can be maintained in this same range in order to promote the optimal aquarium atmosphere. The average temperature for a freshwater fish community is between 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. for plant life the average temperature falls between 76 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

pH

The pH of the water in the tank is also another important factor for any aquarium. different types of fish require different pH balances in the water, while some thrive in a much more acidic atmosphere others may not. It is important not to mix fish that require a more acidic aquarium with those that require a less acidic aquarium in order to promote the health of your fish. Mixing two varieties of fish that have different pH requirements will eventually lead to the death of one of the fish types within the aquarium. as with temperature, pH is another factor that not only influences the health of fish within the tank, but it also affects the health of plant life within the tank as well. The average pH of a freshwater fish community is between 6.5 and 7.5; the average pH requirement for fresh water plant life is 6.0 to 7.5.

While the temperature and the pH balance of the aquarium water are important, there are also numerous other factors which also play an important role in keeping an aquarium community healthy. In order to determine all of these elements you must invest in a water testing kit that will allow you to track these elements within the water of your tank. Some of the elements that should be measured using these home testing kits include ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity and general water hardness. within a freshwater aquarium the fish community requires ammonia and nitrite levels both to be at zero, nitrate levels to be at less than 50 ppm, alkalinity to be between 4 to 8 KH and general water hardness to be between 4 to 12 GH. Many amateur aquarium keepers find the initial water balancing to be intimidating or even overwhelming; however, a home testing kit and a water treatment formula can quickly and easily rectify any discrepancies in the values that are required for a healthy aquarium.

Many people turn their nose up at the idea of keeping a freshwater aquarium rather than a salt water aquarium because they believe saltwater life to be much more interesting and diverse. while there are differences between the types of fish that can survive within fresh water versus saltwater, there is plenty of diversity that can be attained by selecting only freshwater fish to populate an aquarium. The most important factors when selecting freshwater fish are compatibility and experience. if you are seeking to combine a variety of different fish breeds in your aquarium it is important to select fish that are compatible which means not combining aggressive fish with peaceful fish since this would lead to a rapid death for the peaceful breed of fish. Experience is another important factor in selecting the fish that you desire for your aquarium since some fish are considerably easier to take care of than others, even in a freshwater environment. for an inexperienced aquarium keeper to select a breed of fish that is recommended for experienced aquarium owners would not only be a frustrating experience but it would also be an expensive one. Fish that are recommended for expert handling only are done so for a very good reason, they are not hardy fish and require much more experience and knowledge about fish than most beginners have. while there is nothing to stop a beginner from purchasing a much more advanced fish breed, these fish are often expensive to purchase and without the right level of care they can die quickly resulting in a very expensive lesson.

There are a number of fish that are particularly recommended for beginning freshwater aquarium owners, these include: glofish, cichlids, betta fish, goldfish, barb fish, and guppies.

Glofish

Glofish are a type of Danio fish that are recognized for their “glowing” ability. These fluorescent fish glow in a dark tank and are becoming increasingly popular as a starter fish for children who wish to keep their own freshwater fish tank. The glofish are peaceful fish and should only be placed with other peaceful fish that thrive in water between 64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. The glofish requires an omnivorous diet and grows to around 2 1/1 inches requiring a minimum tank size of one gallon.

Cichlids

Cichlids are a popular fish for beginners as well and they come in a wide variety of variations, one of the more popular is the electric blue cichlid. The electric blue cichlid is a particularly aggressive fish and can grow as large as 8” long which puts their minimum tank size requirement at around 70 gallons. while these fish are easy to care for they do require a carnivorous diet. The electric blue cichlid requires an average tank temperature of 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit and a pH of 7.8 to 8.6.

Betta Fish

Betta fish are one of the more popular fish for first time fish owners. These colorful fish are peaceful fish; however, when it comes to housing them with other betta fish things become difficult. Male betta fish are extremely aggressive towards each other and they also should not be housed with female betta fish except for a short period of time when breeding is being promoted and after which they should be separated again. When adding a betta fish to an aquarium it is fairly certain to say that one male betta fish will be the only betta fish in the aquarium; however, some people find that they can house multiple female betta’s together without issue. one of the more popular breeds of betta fish is the crown tail betta which is known for its unique tail design. The crown tail betta fish is a carnivorous fish and can grow as long as 3 inches putting the minimum tank requirement at 1 gallon for this fish. The average temperature for this particular betta breed falls between 75 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit and the required pH should be between 6.0 and 8.0.

Goldfish

Goldfish are another common starting place for first time fish owners as well as children. The red cap oranda goldfish is one of the easier goldfish to care for and is a unique looking and peaceful fish. This particular breed of goldfish can grow as long as 10 inches long putting the minimum tank requirement at 30 gallons or larger. This peaceful fish requires a tank temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5.

Barb Fish

Barb fish are another commonly recommended fish for those beginning with their first freshwater aquarium; in particular the tiger barb is a common favorite. The tiger barb fish is an easy to care for fish; however, it is a semi-aggressive fish so caution should be used when matching this breed of fish with others. The tiger barb grows to a maximum of around 3 inches long and it requires a minimum tank size of 30 gallons. The ideal tank temperature for the tiger barb is between 74 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0.

Guppies

Guppies are a breed of fish that most children have heard about through classroom research and the green cobra guppy is a particularly easy to care for fish when it comes to keeping a freshwater aquarium. The green cobra guppy is a peaceful and easy to care for fish that requires an omnivorous diet. with a maximum size of 2” long this breed of fish requires a minimum tank size of 20 gallons that has a temperature between 64 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 5.5 to 8.0.

Not everyone who is looking to start up a freshwater aquarium is a beginner and as such they have a little more experience with keeping fish which gives them the knowledge required to care for the more advanced freshwater fish breeds. Some of the most common freshwater fish preferred by non-beginners include: fahaka puffers, African butterfly fish, black ghost knifefish, clown loach, kissing gouramis, African tiger fish, silver arowana and the tiger oscar.

Fahaka Puffers

Fahaka puffers are fish that are generally chosen for their puffing ability despite the fact that they are freshwater fish. These fish pose particular difficulty to tank owners and to date no fahaka puffer fish has been bred successfully in captivity. This aggressive fish should be placed in a tank that is a minimum of 125 gallons since they can grow as large as 1 foot 5 inches. These fish are carnivores and require a large number of plants within the aquarium where they can hide.

African Butterfly Fish

The African butterfly fish is a unique looking fish with butterfly like fins; however, while this fish may look dainty it is particularly aggressive and moderately difficult to care for. The African butterfly fish grows to around 4 inches long and requires a tank size of 30 gallons or more with a temperature between 75 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 6.9 to 7.1. These fish are carnivorous and prefer to be fed small fish and shrimp but they can be happy feeding on freeze dried foods recommended for carnivorous fish as well.

Black Ghost Knifefish

The black ghost knifefish is a particularly unusually shaped fish that is moderately difficult to care for. This fish is semi-aggressive and as such care should be taken when selecting tank mates to partner with this breed. The black ghost knifefish is a carnivorous fish that grows to around 1 foot 6 inches and requires a minimum tank size of 50 gallons in order to thrive. This fish requires a tank temperature of 73 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0.

Clown Loach

The clown loach fish is recognized by its black and orange stripes and is commonly sought by freshwater tank owners for its bright decoration as well as its peaceful nature. while peaceful, however, this fish is moderately difficult to care for and it requires an omnivorous diet. The clown loach can grow as large as one foot long and it requires a minimum tank size of 50 gallons with a temperature between 72 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5.

Kissing Gourami’s

The kissing gourami fish are a fish commonly chosen for their appearance of “kissing” each other when they meet other kissing gouramis within the tank. while these silvery pink fish have a rather peaceful name they are actually considered to be a semi-aggressive fish and caution should be used when placing this fish with others in a tank. The kissing gourami fish feed on an omnivorous diet and require a minimum tank size of 30 gallons and require moderate experience to care for them. The ideal tank temperature for this fish is 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 6.8 to 8.5.

African Tiger Fish

The African tiger fish is a fish that can grow to a particularly large size and as such it requires moderately experienced owners and a minimum tank size of 500 gallons. The fully grown African tiger fish can grow as large as 3 feet 4 inches and can be extremely aggressive with other tank mates. The ideal water temperature for this carnivorous fish is 73 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH level of 6.5 to 7.8.

Silver Arowana

The silver arowana fish is considered to be an extremely fortuitous symbol in many Asian cultures and as such many people practicing the art of feng shui seek this fish for their freshwater aquariums. The silver arowana is a moderately difficult fish to care for and it is semi-aggressive meaning that care should be taken when placing it in a tank with other tank mates. This carnivorous fish can grow as large as 3 foot 4 inches and as such it requires a minimum tank size of 250 gallons.

Tiger Oscar

The Tiger Oscar can be an extremely difficult fish to work with and keep healthy and happy and as such it is not recommended for anyone with less than expert experience with fish. This semi-aggressive carnivorous fish can grow as long as 1 foot and it requires a minimum tank size of 70 gallons with an average temperature between 72 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH of 6.0 to 8.0.

Many people go in to their first aquarium buying experience with the belief that they can only purchase fish of a certain breed to populate their tank, this is untrue. while you are restricted by the temperament of the fish that you select for your freshwater tank you do not have to select all one breed of fish to populate the tank – in fact, this would lead to a rather boring aquarium! Jump in to diversity with your freshwater aquarium and try matching different fish breeds to create the ultimate freshwater experience, just keep in mind that in order to have a healthy aquarium you should match fishes temperaments as well as their requirements. Select fish that are compatible with your experience level and compatible with each other and you will have no problem growing a thriving freshwater aquarium environment.

While many people may lead you to believe that owning a freshwater aquarium just simply isn’t as much fun as owning a saltwater aquarium, this is a matter of opinion. Freshwater aquarium owners can experience just as much diversity in their fish as saltwater aquarium owners can and some freshwater fish are even more aggressive and picky than some saltwater fish! Ultimately, the choice as to whether you should go with a freshwater or saltwater tank should be based upon personal preference and not the opinion that one tank has “better” fish to offer, because this simply isn’t true.

Adventure industry helps Scouts plan Summit  – News – The Charleston Gazette – West Virginia News and Sports -

The Charleston Gazette West Virginia News and Sports

MOUNT HOPE, W.Va. — some of the world's top consultants and designers are involved in planning venues for adventure activities taking shape at the Boy Scouts of America's new Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Fayette County.

Aaron Spohn, who partnered with ESPN to develop the X Games and design and build competition courses for the extreme sports series, is in charge of conceptual design for the Summit's skateboard and BMX bike courses. His California-based Spohn Ranch design firm has been planning and building skateboard parks since the late 1980s.

Both indoor and outdoor parks, making use of progressive terrain features and foam pits, are being planned. they will accommodate skateboarders of all skill levels.

Gravity Logic, a Whistler, British Columbia, firm that designs mountain bike and BMX courses around the world, has completed a demonstration BMX "pump" course — a packed-earth loop track with an endless series of jumps — at the Summit. A downhill mountain bike "flow" trail, with nearly 100 turns, is partially complete. A freestyle BMX course and miles of additional mountain bike trails are planned.

Boulder, Colo., based Eldorado Climbing Walls is designing climbing walls and towers at Summit Bechtel Reserve.

While the New River Gorge is a natural climbing mecca, it is not able to accommodate the demands of the 50,000 or so Boy Scouts expected for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree and future Jamborees. The largest group climbing sites in the New River Gorge National River allow no more than 12 climbers at a time. Potential climbing surfaces that exist within the 10,600-acre Summit Bechtel Reserve would be subject to intensive wear, and are not capable of meeting the demands of tens of thousands of campers.

"The New River Gorge is a great and beautiful place, but it doesn't necessarily have the types of routes for our numbers and to teach what we want to teach," said Eldorado Climbing Walls vice president Steve Holmes in a Summit Bechtel blog post. "We are building enough climbing walls at the Summit to make it self-contained without getting out into the Gorge."

The artificial climbing walls being planned for the Boy Scout facility are designed to look and even feel like the local sandstone, and will contain natural-looking features. some of the walls will be built into real, reinforced cliffs.

When Eldorado's wall and tower installations are complete, up to 1,400 scouts at a time will be able to experience bouldering and roped climbing at the Summit.

Eldorado's walls have been installed at a number of universities across the nation. NASA recently used its climbing panels in an underwater experiment off the coast of Florida to train for the possible exploration of near-Earth asteroids in a low-gravity environment.

Bonsai Design, the New Zealand-based firm that designed TreeTops Canopy Tour at Adventures on the Gorge near Fayetteville and the high-speed zipline at Burning Rock Resort near Tams, is helping the Summit plan and build six miles of ziplines. One demonstration zipline is nearly complete.

A vast shooting sports and archery range complex, including a sporting clays course capable of handling 3,300 shooters every four hours, is being planned in a 60-acre section of the scouting reserve. Mike Davey, founder and president of The Shooting Academy in Phoenix, Ariz., is in charge of its design.

Recent projects by Davey and his firm include The Shooting Academy at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania and the Abu Dhabi International Shooting Club in the United Arab Emirates.

"What we're doing here is taking that same type of design work, but make it the best there is around," Davey said on a Summit blog posting.

The Summit range will also be the biggest around. While most of the larger sporting clay ranges have 24 to 36 shooting stations, there will be 150 to 160 at the Summit. There will also be dynamic, or tactical, target shooting ranges and 3-D courses.

Scouting adventure activities will be offered at six high-adventure bases at the Summit: Aquatics, climbing, mountain biking, skateboarding-BMX, shooting sports-archery and ziplines-canopy tours. The aquatics base will include Scuba in four Olympic-sized portable pools that will be set up on the property, plus kayaking, paddle-boarding, dragon boats and a water obstacle course, all taking place on a series of lakes being built at the Summit.

"This will be the first jamboree where scouts can reserve a space in curriculum-based adventure activities," said Gary Hartley, director of community and government relations at the Summit. "This will allow the scouts to spend more time in a specific activity to more intensely develop their skills. Reservations will be available to registered participants online. Unscheduled adventure activities will also be available, so people can just walk up and try something."

After the 2013 National Jamboree is over, the plan is to make many of the adventure activities available to the public to sample, on demonstration courses near Summit Center, the reserve's 100-acre core area, Hartley said.

The Summit will have five camping villages for scouts and one for adults.  Each village will be made up of four sub-camps that can accommodate up to 2,000 campers each.

Once at the Summit, scouts will travel between their camping villages and high-adventure bases on foot. Pains have been taken in the planning process to eliminate the need for vehicle use within the facility.

The 700-foot-long, nine-story high Consol Energy Wing Tip Bridge will cross a ravine and connect the reserve's central activity area to the camping villages and high-adventure bases on the eastern side of the tract. in some cases, the huge pedestrian bridge will turn what would have been a 45-minute hike into a two-minute walk.

From the span, which will have three separate walkways, Scouts will get a birds-eye view of the Summit's ziplines and mountain biking trails. A $15 million donation to the Summit by Consol Energy is paying for the bridge's construction.

While the Summit encompasses 10,600 acres of land on Garden Ground Mountain and its environs, its development footprint takes in only 1,270 acres, leaving an abundance of land for backcountry activities.
